The Value of a Quality Drywall Install and Finish

When it comes to remodeling a home, multiple components have to be considered in order to ensure a successful project. This can include the budget, the desired outcome, the team used, and so on. Within that list exists the materials used in a project. Like any other factor, the materials used in a home should be carefully picked, as they can either contribute to a project’s longevity and success or create a disastrous issue further down the road. When it comes to materials, drywall is a popular choice in the construction of walls and flooring. To better understand why drywall is such a hot pick, I reached out to Joaquin from VIP Drywall & Painting to better explain the value of professionally installed drywall.

Before getting into the importance of professionalism, the benefits of using drywall can be explored. One of the biggest pros of drywall is that it’s affordable and typically readily available at home improvement stores such as Home Depot and Lowes. This can mean the budget for a project can go into other things, and not having to wait to get drywall can free up space in the project timeline. In the same vein, drywall installation is also fast--it may only take a week or two to complete, while plaster and other materials can take up to a few months. Drywall is also lighter than its alternatives like stucco and plaster, meaning there is less of a load on the structure.

Apart from knowing the benefits of using drywall, the pros of having it professionally installed are crucial to know. The quality of drywall completed by the average person vs. professionals is like night and day. This can be seen throughout the process of drywall installation, starting with prepping the drywall. Proper prep work is key to any successful endeavor. When professionals like Joaquin install drywall, they take preliminary steps that translate to a smoother project. “We check the framing to make sure everything is level and square,” says Joaquin, “and in residential areas … we take pictures of all outlets and lights, anything that might get buried under the drywall while it’s getting installed”. Professionals will also approach the entire process with more care. “We keep the site as clean as possible,” says Joaquin. Dust is generated throughout the installation process due to sanding down the drywall. These particles can end up in HVAC systems and on personal belongings if cleaning isn’t taken seriously. “To minimize this, we use dustless drywall sanders, create negative pressure rooms, and section off the other portions of the home so dust doesn’t get there”. Though this doesn’t affect the overall quality of just the drywall itself, keeping the site clean is just a standard professionals uphold so it doesn’t create any issues for clients.

The value of professionally installed drywall is shown the most in the end product. When installed incorrectly, there can be movement in the drywall, nail pops, visible seams, and so on. These affect the overall aesthetic of drywall and can hinder its function, as people want their walls to be stationary and secure. When a professional is used, drywall is installed in a way that ensures its a lasting product. “Someone that doesn’t know what they’re doing, they don’t sand down the drywall,” says Joaquin. “A lot of mud will get used in the seams and it’ll create a bump that you’ll see when light hits it. A flat wall is the difference between a good and bad finish”. Issues like nail pops tend to happen when nails are used instead of the recommended drywall adhesive. Though nails can get the job done, professionals have an eye for quality and will take the best steps to deliver a job of a higher quality. “A good drywall finish ties the whole job together,” says Joaquin.

Drywall can often be an easy choice to make in the remodeling process due its value.
