Egress means escape

Writer: Jessica FosterJessica Foster

An egress is defined as “means or place of going out; an exit”. That alone should push the importance of egress windows in your remodeling project. Egress windows are installed to be emergency exits in the event of a fire or any other situation that requires an accessible exit. Building codes require egress windows in any room that count as habitual such as bedrooms and basements. Ultimately, you will need an egress and installing windows/doors that fit today’s standards for safety is the best choice you can make. It’s not only an investment in keeping your construction project up to code, it’s an investment in the safety of your living-space.

How egress windows are installed for your renovation is also important. The International Residential Code (IRC) has strict regulations for egress windows. Even if you already have egress windows in your home, be sure to ask us about today’s regulations if your house is older, as these rules are more recent.

IRC REGULATIONS:

  • Minimum width of opening: 20 in.

  • Minimum height of opening: 24 in.

  • Minimum net clear opening: 5.7 sq. ft. (5.0 sq. ft. for ground floor)

  • Maximum sill height above floor: 44 in.

There are more specific regulations from the IRC. Make sure you hire us, the professionals, who can make sure every element of your egress window project is done right. Egress windows are not only required by building code, but they can make a difference in dangerous situations where your normal escape route is inaccessible. For the safety of yourself and family as well as staying up to code, you want to be sure egress windows installed in adherence to the IRC’s guidelines.
