How Clients Can Make Budget Friendly Decisions

The budget of a project is a crucial component. So, making financially wise decisions during the planning stage of a project and during the project itself is of extreme importance. As such, it can be beneficial for clients to have some tips when they decide to pursue a renovation project.

When it comes to the budget, one thing clients can do to make financially wise decisions is to consider short term and long term costs. It’s easy to just focus on the immediate costs when making choices in a project, and sometimes this can lead to making decisions that seem beneficial at first but are actually detrimental in the long run. If keeping costs as low as possible is a high priority during a renovation, clients may be compelled to pick the cheapest option that still fulfills their needs. However, it’s important to consider the more pricey alternatives when it comes to picking out things such as appliances, windows, doors, and so on. For example, energy efficient appliances may be the more pricey option to purchase, but it can be a good idea to invest in them due to how they can reduce future utility bills. The same can be said for energy efficient windows and doors--these may be initially expensive, but they have a long term reward in that they help with insulation, again reducing bills. There are multiple scenarios where it may be wiser to pay a bit more initially to get these benefits--so it’s critical to know of these benefits and to consider their usefulness when making decisions.

Similar to considering more expensive alternatives that will be beneficial in the long run, clients should always consider alternatives in general when it comes to picking out materials. Unlike appliances, there are some situations where picking a cheaper option can be the right way to go. For example, hardwood floors are a popular choice for multiple reasons such as durability, but hardwood can also be costly. Meanwhile, there are cheaper alternatives such as vinyl flooring and laminate flooring. If a client wants hardwood because of the aesthetic, vinyl flooring can be an easy alternative as it can mimic that look while also costing less. This is a great way to cut down on costs while still having an option to fulfill client’s needs. Still, if durability is a client’s highest priority, hardwood may be the best option due to it lasting almost 100 years if installed properly, in comparison to the lifespan of vinyl flooring of 10-20 years. This all depends on the client’s needs and wants. So, it’s important to keep an open mind and evaluate alternative options, as it’s possible an alternative option may either better fit what a client wants than their initial option, or it may hit the same criteria while being a cheaper option.

Being aware of all the possibilities is a great way to not only cut down on budget costs, but to ensure that the budget is being spent in the most efficient way possible.
