The Value of Having Professionals On-Site

As a contractor, the measures we take when it comes to handling our projects are all calculated, and we employ methods we deem are the best. This is not just seen in how we professionally work on-site, but the preliminary steps we include as well. Aside from a phone discussion, we like to do an on-site review before delving into a project, a component that is critical in setting up a successful project. However, it may be difficult at first to see the value in an on-site review. To better illustrate why we hold an on-site review to a level of high importance, I talked with our owner, Randy Jones, to explain why an on-site review is an integral part of the remodeling process.

An on-site review helps solve the problem the remodeling project is started for. Randy states that “a project formulates when a homeowner/family that lives there comes to the conclusion that what they have currently doesn’t work for them.” A home improvement can solve this issue--for example, if a kitchen space is too small for entertaining guests, it’s possible that the room may be expanded. While most homeowners could come to that solution by themselves, as a whole, their thought process is limited to their knowledge and the knowledge of those around them. It’s important to get a professional involved in the conversation to expand that knowledge. As a contractor, we play that role and “in a holistic approach, like to discuss the project in terms of foundational pieces.” Using this approach, we like to see the full scope of issues with the house and how a renovation project needs to go in order to address these issues. The homeowner may have already drawn their own conclusion with what needs to be done, but as we have a different perspective, we like to get our own impression as well. As we’ve been involved with numerous projects, we’ve seen multiple problems and their solutions, as well as what doesn’t work.

So, what exactly happens during an on-site review? Again, as a professional, Randy emphasizes the importance of taking a holistic approach. The condition of the home as a whole has to be taken into consideration, from the basement to the attic. This includes evaluating the home’s structure and its condition, the home’s insulation and its condition, and the condition of the home’s mechanics such as the electric, HVAC, and so on. Even if the renovation is only targeting a single room, the rest of the house has to be able to support this change. Not only does this broad approach bring about more possible solutions, but it also figures out if a project is viable or not. Figuring out after work is done that something isn’t possible not only wastes time, but money. A professional contractor knows what issues to expect and what can be done to avoid them. Reviewing the site gives us the information necessary to figure out these issues.

This is where the value of an on-site review comes from. By having a professional come to the site, we are further involved in the conversation of what needs to be done to solve the issue. This also makes working along with the customer easier, as only they can relay what they want out of the project, and we can help them with possible solutions. We try to make setting up an on-site review easy, with a preceding phone conversation to help gather information before we view the site. The $95 dollar fee associated with the on-site review is the price for having a professional on-site and the knowledge we can provide. So, “the value we bring is attempting to solve problems”. By taking a holistic approach, every factor is considered so nothing unexpected pops up. This also allows us to have multiple solutions on hand--a project may be completed in a certain way and be viable, but there may be a better alternative. Getting a professional involved just ensures the project can proceed in the best possible way, and an on-site review is a key component to getting the best end result.
