When discussing a home remodeling project, most of the conversation usually focuses on the steps necessary for a successful one. However, another important aspect is knowing when it’s time for a home to undergo a renovation. There are multiple occasions that can call for a home renovation to be done, and knowing when it's time for an upgrade is something every homeowner should know.
A room in a home is due for an upgrade as soon as it no longer fulfills the homeowner’s needs. This can come in many shapes and forms, such as a room being too cramped. If a kitchen is too small to enjoyably cook food in, or if a living room is too cramped to entertain guests in, they may be due for a remodel. If a room’s layout has nothing beneficial about it or is even obstructive, remodeling the space may be the best course of action. For example, a bathroom’s layout may be poorly put together, causing dead space due to the placement of fixtures. A remodel wouldn’t necessarily change the size of the room, but rearranging the plumbing may free up some space, allowing a more spacious bathroom. If the lighting in a room is poor, it can decrease the quality of the time spent in there. It’s important to note that in these scenarios, there’s not always something inherently wrong with the space, but rather there is a discrepancy between what the space can offer and what the homeowner wants. If the space is not comparable to what the homeowner wants, it may be time for an upgrade via a home renovation to reach that dream.
Aside from personal needs and wants, there are other ways to know when parts of the house are in need of an upgrade. As home’s age, so do their appliances, flooring, walls, mechanics, and so on. Though some of these components can last years, they eventually will wear down over time. Appliances generally last around 10 years, while other parts of the house such as flooring (depending on the material), windows, and doors have a much longer lifespan. It’s time for a home upgrade when these components start to show their age, if not before. It’s beneficial to be prompt in re-finishing a floor or wall before damage can set in, as this can be costly to fix as the damage spreads. Also, as appliances and other parts of the house age, they don’t function as efficiently, meaning the same amount of money is spent running them with a decreased output. The same goes for windows and doors--these help with insulation which will affect the cost of keeping a home warm/cool. New windows and doors can help with energy efficiency, which is a monetary gain for the homeowner. Multiple parts come together to make a home, and ensuring all these parts are functioning properly is beneficial to the homeowner.
