Backyard Deck Project: Accommodating Homeowner Needs

When a homeowner decides it's time for a renovation, there is usually a need/want that the current space doesn't fulfill. As a professional contractor, we are determined to help by delivering projects that meet these desires. One project we are currently wrapping up is a good example of this, which entailed building a new deck in a client's backyard.

For this project, the client already had a smaller 15x10 deck. While the deck’s size had served adequately for the client, there had been some changes including family moving back home and the original deck was no longer large enough to accommodate these additional family members. Also, the deck was reaching the end of its time, with the wood finishes at the end of their life span. So, these two issues called for something new.

The client requested a larger deck that would be 28x20, and wanted no railings so the deck could flow freely into the lawn. The backyard of the home was already large, so the idea was to have a deck to compliment this visually. With the deck lacking a railing, steps would be needed all around the perimeter, as the deck was high enough to need steps but not railing. To make this aesthetically appealing, we clipped the corners of the deck to give it more of a unique shape. Along with this request, the client also wanted composite materials for the deck, which are low maintenance.

These steps allowed us to create a deck that met the needs of our client. Additionally, this was also thanks to some of the products we worked with, such as lumber provided by BMC, GFP concrete, Trex Decking, Simpson Strong-Tie, and Fasten Master.
