Egress windows
Why do we need them? Egress means exit. If a fire were to break out in your home each are with habitable space (bedrooms, basement) needs a means for escape. Safety is the key and the International code council states in the 2018 publication of the IRC (international residential code) that:
"Dwellings shall be provided with a means of egress in accordance with this section. The means of egress shall provide a continuous and unobstructed path of vertical and horizontal egress travel from all portions of the dwelling to the required egress door without requiring travel through a garage. The required egress door shall open directly to a public way or to a yard or court that opens to a public way." -R311.1 IRC 2018
For a remodel this is important as any newly finished space must comply with today's standards for egress. Adding a bedroom to a home requires that an egress is included to certain specifications. That can be a window of certain dimensions. Finishing a basement requires including a mean of egress which typically means creating an opening in the basement wall, installing the appropriate sized window, and adding a well with ladder so that a person can escape the basement and go directly outside. From a basement, a walkout can also be created where an opening is made, a door is installed, and a larger trench is dug into the ground with concrete walls and steps.
