Prepping for a Remodeling Project: What Clients Can Do

We’ve already heavily emphasized the importance of the planning stage of a project. As professional contractors, we take the planning stage seriously as it serves as the blueprint of the final product. However, there are also steps that clients themselves can take during the planning stage that can attribute to a project’s success.

Everyone wants a project to go smoothly, and while meticulous planning contributes heavily to the successful execution of a project, there can still be unforeseen problems that pop up. Being prepared for changes is important for both contractor’s and clients, as there may be situations that call for adaptability. This means being ready for possible adjustments to a project’s scope of work, budget, and /or timeline. While a project is underway, some issues such as structural problems may occur, internal issues such as the inside of a wall being rotted that are only seen during the remodeling process. Something like this will require repair, which can affect the project timeline and cost. Weather can be another predicament that is hard to account for. Depending on what type of work is being done, severe weather may delay work and cause shifts in the timeline. It’s important to take these events into account and be ready for possible changes, not just mentally prepared but financially prepared as well. As a professional contractor, we have years of experience from past projects that give us a certain level of adaptability, and we can share this with clients. Though we can’t control the weather or be aware of problems that only present themselves once construction is underway, we still have dealt with similar issues before and can create the most efficient solutions. Having clients on board for changes makes this process easier.

Another important way for a client to prepare for a project is taking the time to pick a contractor that fits the project and their needs. There are a plethora of contractors to pick from, but not all will conduct work in the same way or hold the same values. Clients should ask themselves what they want out of their project--do they simply want the work done in the quickest way possible, or do they want to ensure they’re getting the highest quality of work? Neither answer is wrong and simply depends on the wants and needs of the client, but it’s still imperative that clients find the appropriate contractor that will fulfill their desired project. If a contractor isn't a good match for a client, the work can still be done but there may be some disparity between the outcome and what the client wanted. As a professional contractor, making sure we are a good match for our clients is integral to us, which is why we emphasize the steps we take in construction. This is why we like to have phone consultations with a client, as we have certain values we uphold. If a client wants to invest into a project to be sure it’s done to the highest quality possible, we want to let them know they made the right choice coming to us.
