The Importance of Realistic Expectations in Remodeling

A common issue within the renovation industry is the existence of unrealistic expectations surrounding a project. Typically, these expectations will revolve around the project cost and the project timeline that a client desires. While this can be a common occurrence, setting realistic expectations as soon as possible is a must, and bringing professional contractors on to a job can help immensely with such a problem.

As stated in one of our past blogs, we consider the three pillars of construction when undertaking a construction project, these pillars being: cost, scope of work, and project timeline. These three factors have a push and pull relationship; they are interconnected and changing one will affect the two others. As such, having unrealistic expectations about any of these factors can cause issues. If a client wants work done to a certain standard, how much budget they allow for a project is going to determine if such work can even be done. If a client wants work done in a specified period of time, it's going to affect just how much work is done and to what level of quality it is completed. Unrealistic expectations are quite common due to all the components necessary for a remodeling project, but it’s still crucial to create realistic expectations as soon as possible. If the project a client wants is not possible, it’s imperative this is made clear early on before the project is underway. This way, the client doesn’t manage their expectations at the last minute when it's revealed part of a project is not viable, resulting in an unsatisfactory project, a project that has to undergo costly or timely changes, or any other undesirable outcome.

As professional contractors, we take communication between ourselves and our clients seriously as well as the work we complete. As such, we are aware of what is and isn’t possible in projects depending on the criteria given by a client, such as budget, and believe in the importance of relaying this to our clients. This doesn’t just translate to a project’s success, but also to our client’s happiness and overall level of satisfaction of their project. We don’t want to mislead our clients by having them believe a project can be completed within certain parameters if it can’t be, and we don’t want that truth to be unveiled while a project is underway. So, we utilize effective communication and our knowledge and experience to have these conversations with clients right away. This is why we include preliminary steps such as free phone consultations as well as our on-site review, to gather information and ensure the project the client wants can be done in a way that works for them. If it can’t, we are there to provide additional solutions that we deem are most efficient, so that if changes have to be made, they can still be close to what was originally wanted. Our experience from the projects we’ve taken on allows us to have this foresight of whether a project is possible or not, as well as our construction knowledge, and we use these to help set realistic expectations with our clients.

Realistic expectations are important; this way, our clients are aware of the outcome they will receive. This prevents disappointment when the project either doesn’t live up to what the client wants, or the costly problem that will arise when attempting to salvage a project that isn’t viable in some aspect. As professionals, we believe in delivering projects that are more than just satisfactory, and this means ensuring our clients don’t have the wrong idea about any part of their project.
